If you bought it new and still have all the paperwork there is a "key code" on the paperwork (there is with mine) That might help. I think you have to go to a dealer though if that was your only key and you need one asap now. I would take a wild guess at $100-$150 range.......ouch.

Depends how much of a hurry you are in. You can get keys on e-bay for about $10, but you'll still have to get it programmed into the ECU. I paid $38 to have a remote programmed into the ECU (0.4hrs + diagnostc monitor fixed fee).

A key code might help for cutting a new key, but each key has a unique number that the ECU has to recognize. if you have 2 good keys you can add more yourself, less than that and you hve to get it programmed by the dealer.
It maybe that you need a new lock too if you don't have a key code.

Yeah, you are probably right about the "key code". I think when you lose your only key, you are forced to go to the dealer.

Sharpy, now that you got the one key, you should consider getting 2 more off e-bay and go from there. Just a thought. Better yet, I hope you find the original key you lost tomorrow at work. That would be good.

Maybe for the 02-04 key fobs, but with atleast the 06-07s (and i think 05s?) the coded chip keys that have the built in fobs are expensive... i think around $150 at a dealer and you obviously can't get a used one.

Yup, the 05's too. I have the integrated key also on mine. The 02-04 were different.

After you get fixed up get a spare!!

I have a spare remote and key in my lock box at home, and my keychain of misc keys that i keep clipped onto my belt also has a spare key, so one way or another i never get locked out or stranded, i also have a spare key for my wife's car on that keychain and i have a spare remote and key for her car at home in the lock box also.

She has locked her keys in the car at work a few times and i had to run down and use my spare to get them out, that saved me $100 each time using that $2 key!

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Not sure about newer Chrysler vehicles but GM vehicles need a master key(a already programmed key) just to program new keys.Last guy that lost all of his keys it cost him almost $6000('03 Caddy) to get a new key when I worked at the dealership.

If it cost $6k for a key i would have said you can have the car on a trade in and get a new one!

I can tell you from experience it doesn't cost that though. My neighbor who has a Denali lost their only key and fob shortly after they bought it. They were actually going shopping after buying it and lost it. They had the vehicle towed back to the dealer and they suggested to wait a couple days to see if the key gets turned in at the mall they were in at the time. Well they waited a few days and kept checking, nothing.. So the dealer ordered up a new key and fob for it, hooked up to the computer in the shop and programmed them and cut the key using the key code. It cost them just a bit over $400 to get it done, key was like $150 including the programming and cutting, the fob was another $200 and the shop fees took the rest.

Funny thing is they planned on spending the $300 to get another key and fob for it but the dealer didn't have them in stock so they were ordered. After that set was used to get them back on the road they then ordered a second set for spares. $600 for keys and fobs.. Lesson learned!

I was going to get a 3rd key from ebay and program it myself as you can do that if you have 2 working keys. I never got around to it....yet. I did have a blank cut for $1.50 to carry in my wallet just in case I am out somewhere and lock the transponder key in the jeep. (my spare transponder key is too big to carry around and is kept at home) The extra cut blank key is only good for unlocking the door, but then it will of course set off the alarm. So if I happen to lock my transponder key in the jeep, I can use it to unlock the door and get the transponder key and turn off the alarm. That is all it is good for.

I try to be extra careful with the key because it is a major pain (not to mention the $$$) to replace one. One time I locked myself out of my truck while it was ideling during the middle of a blizzard years ago (don't ask) and had to get someone to run a spare key up to me as I didn't want to break in. Ever since then I try to be real careful with keys. Still, anything can happen.

tjkj, $6,000 for a key is ludricrous. I would have unloaded the car first like kbonly said......(after I went **** or something first).....haha

well i found out how much it is going to cost me. the key from the dealer is 145 16 for to cut it and 65 to program the it,so about 226 + tax then add about 100 for towing to the dealer so they can program the key

i am hoping that a buddy of mine can find a car trailer so i don't have to pay for towing

On my Saturn Astra it's nearly impossible to lock my keys in the car since the only way to lock the doors is with the key remote. And, you can not lock the doors with the driver door open. Also you can not lock the doors with the key in the ignition. As soon as you open the door to get out all the doors automatically unlock so you can not leave the vehicle idling in the winter and have the doors locked even with another key.

With my jeep I only have 1 programmed key. It makes me nervous but not as much as going to the dealer to pay $$ to get another one programmed. I also have 'dummy' keys. To avoid getting locked out whenever I am offroad I always leave at least 1 window rolled down.
