What is the difference between a KJ and a KK Liberty?

I bought a 04 Liberty, my first Liberty. The title says
nothing about KJ or KK. There is nothing on the side
of the Liberty like Sport or anything like that. It's a
Liberty with the disapointing 3.7 V6 and five speed
manual trans. No extra skid plates installed either.

So, what do I have? I've owned several Jeeps over
the years but have never heard of this KK, KJ and I
think there may even be a few more Kx's...

The letters KJ are the corporate call letters just like the YJ, TJ CJ for the wrangler style Jeep. Since you have the manual trans, you have a KJ Sport.
It has the gray textured fender flairs too, right?

Well while that's somewhat halfway true... OK it is true but you've got somethings mixed up...

A KK is what replaced the KJ for the 2008MY, which is based on the KJ in itself and is shared with the KA (Dodge Nitro).

KK engineered first, KA introduced first. :)

I got the KJ vs. KK right (order)....but the KK was engineered before the KA??? Interesting.:)

Yep, low end torque rules! That and a turbo...:D In 4Lo I go anywhere. Mine also has auto throttle which is fun, it climbs a hill without me touching the skinny pedal.

Dodge Nitro was introduced overseas first too, but funny enough only as a 4x2.


The Nitro here is available in 4wd an AWD, both with out low range....

and as for where these numbers are found, they are the first 2 digits on ur vehicles serial no, usually found on the driver side door jamb

I think the designations (KJ,XJ etc.) being used by owners was my first indication that it really is a sickness .. Jeep Disease that is .... in a good way of course :)

As for the 3.7L being dissapointing, not on my 03' Sport KJ. When i stomp the skinny pedal she responds with a HOOOYAAA lets go baby..

Yeah I agree.

The 3.7L moves the 4,200lb non-aerodynamic KJ pretty good for a v6.

I agree. It even moves a Grand Cherokee OK. I think the 210 hp rating may be a little conservative. It gets up to 100MPH faster than a box should, lol. The Sport gets a louder muffler and through the years they changed air intake configurations yet the power never changed. Also HP ratings changed a couple of years ago which resulted in slightly lower numbers for some Japanese cars and slightly higher numbers for some American cars.

A lot of the old Cherokee fans complain that the torque numbers on the 3.7 are too peaky compared to the old 4.0 but it seems torquey enough to me. Isn't torquey another word for underpowered?

Agreed... it moves everything its in pretty well with the exception of the Dodge Ram.

And I'm pretty sure the XJ had a bit more HP than that.

The early 4.0l were probably about that, but for a 2000 XJ, I think it was 195...or 190....:)
