So I am deciding on getting some new 6.5" door speakers. Right now I am running Infinity Reference 6022i's and was looking for the Infinity components, but the local stereo shops are not carrying them anymore for some strange reason. So now do I run a different brand in the 4 doors, and what brand to go with? Alpine Type R's/S's ? JL Audio? JBL's? I think I will be running the Alpine MRP-F600 4 channel amp, and need a good set of front components and a set of coaxial rears.

So the question is...what type of speaker are any of you audiophiles running?

I love my stockers. I haven't had this much bass since my Cougar which had aftermarket 6X9's. My dilema is the right HU to complement the stock speakers since the stock unit blows goats. I want more volume while keeping the nice bass levels. Hopefully I don't kill my stock bass levels with an aftermarket HU. If that happens, I'll be checking this thread to see what kind of speakers I should look into.

You will not lose bass if you change HU. You will get better sound out of your stock speakers.

I am interested in hearing what others did, replacing stock speakers with aftermarket speakers without external amp.. Just want to see if aftermarket H/Us are powerful enough..

I swapped mine out with a 200w Kenwood (KDC-638U) and was very happy with the factory sound. Much better than the tape player that came in mine anyway.

My bass was undoubtedly increased, even prior to the 2 10"s.

I replaced my stock HU, and the bass is fine... I added tube subs, maybe another 50% more bass, but, I don't need the people in front of me to get hearing loss... I hate that, when I can't hear anything 'cause some ****** behind me can't hear as it is...

Well I ran a Panasonic HU 50x4 to my stock speakers and the sound sucked. (blarg). So then I ran Infinity 6022i's to the front doors and sound was much better.

Oh forget about stock speakers with aftermarket h/u.. :)
So you got infinities without an amp and you are happy with it?

Lets just say the without an amp any speaker will sound bad, speakers are meant to be driven by power, especially anything above stock speakers in the aftermarket world.

So to answer your question....no I have the infinity's running off a 200 watt amp.

Under powering a speaker can be worse than over powering them. I like my music loud!! The volume usually never sees anything below half volume anyways.

I have Polk component system. The sound is fantastic but lacks really good bass thanks to the HU Kenwood KDC-X492 I installed. I need to get one of those Kenwood powered subwoofers that will fit under the seat.

I am trying to put infinity ref 6022i's in my girl friends liberty right now. Did you have the infinity system in your car? Im debating how to hook them up due to the amp on the stock ones. Thanks

Yes - JVC KD-A805 on the standard (non-infinity) speakers. I do have a 10" sub as well.

Honestly...without the sub the stock speakers with the JVC sound "hollow". I don't know how else to explain it. They certainly lost some bass. It's cleaner and crisper, but the mids just seem to sound wierd. I need to play with the HU settings more to see if i can get it sounding better.

No I didn't have the Infinity stereo stock in mine, just regular old factory junk speakers and basic factory head unit. I ran an aftermarket HU & amp to the Reference 6022i's.
Now I have a set of Alpine components in the front doors, and waiting on a good 4 channel amp so I can get the Infinity's in the rear doors too.

let me say that I'm running stock speakers with an aftermarket head unit, a sony BTX-3700U to be exact..

I noticed alot better sound overall, lows mid's and highs. then I added two Rockford Fosgate P2's in a ported box, and now my stock speakers just can't keep up lol..

I can turn the high pass filter for the doors to around 80-120Hz, and I can crank the piss out of it.. but then I have this huge gap in sound.. I got my lows (alot of it), got my highs which are a bit muddy at high volume (what can you expect from stock paper speakers), got my vocals ect, and then the gap.. no input as far as bass notes go from the doors.

I know door speakers aren't suppose to act as subwoofers and cause coins to bounce around in your cup holder, but hearing some low output from them really fills that gap that I seem to get when I turn the HPF on.

at lower volumes without the HPF, I get some pretty incredible sound staging with stock speakers, but right about volume level 32-35 (1 - 50) they start takin a shit, and if I wanna go louder, I need the HPF.

I usually only turn it up really loud to let the subs sing, which in turn distorts my vision, makes my throat itch, and kinda gets difficult to breathe lol.. I need to find a door speaker that can keep up with my subs. I have a 4 channel 600w amp I can power em with.

what would you folks recommend? I was lookin at alpine SPS-600 or something earlier on crutchfield, not sure though.. almost bought a set of crap-ass speakers from wal-mart.. which I know would be a mistake.
