Damn those pics look like lack of oil change to me. I think the shop was either not changing it or putting used oil back into it. I've never seen mobile 1 do that. I have 99k on mine and it runs great. I use castrol and change it every 2500 miles when my evic says so. The only driver abuse that can cause sludge like that is not changing the oil. Driving the car hard wont cause that.

I had something similar to that with only 20k on my jeep. They replace plugs, coil packs, head gaskets then rebuilt the heads. No probs since, knock on wood.

Glad you got the engine back together. I would of put some forged pistons, a cam, and had those heads ported while I was in there!

Put a shift kit in the ******, get the computer reprogrammed by B&G Chrysler, and you would have a nice peppy 3.7. :)

Damn 3.7L again

Well, it happen again. Engine ran fine for a couple months and the rocker arm fell off again. New rockers, new valve lash adjusters. The heads had a valve job and spring pressure check by the machine shop. The engine was steam and vat cleaned. New rings, main, rod and counterbalance bearings. All new gaskets. What a crappy design. The only thing I know to do is replace the valve springs and valves or entire head.A new head is around $800 and another set of $175 upper gaskets.. Maybe a better idea is to have the thing crushed and go buy a old Jeep with a 4.0L in line 6.

Update, apparently the machine shop that did my heads did not do the job right. It was a bent valve stem. When I took the valeve aout of the head it was tight in the guide. I also found another one on the left side. Just goes to show you not to trust someone elses work. I will also find another machine shop.

Well, our 2002 has just popped over 169K now. Still on the factory trans (which fianlly had the oil dropped finally at 150K) and the original engine.

Truth be known, Engine is getting tired - it's using a quart every 1500 miles or so - but it's still pulling well and starts every time. This is also an engine that hasn't been well serviced be its previous owners.

Yeah, sadly... that's probably why, but for 169k and a lack of service, without any strange noises I'd say it's doing quite well.

Dang, 150k without an oil change on that ****** is pretty good.

Our corolla started burning oil before it hit 80k so youre doing just fine. :)

You get what you pay for with that over seas crap.

Remember this is the 'more robust' 45RFE transmission, not the 42 - even so - it still works fine. Was a littlew scary at first after swapping out the oil and filters when it shifted really harsly, but it got better in the weeks after.

We're still swinging it out in a week or two though to put in the 4x4 trans and other bits, as this snow is a PITA with a 4x2!

Brings back bad memories..my 4 cyl Focus started lighting the engine light and it was CYL #4......I had it cleared and 2 days later the head went....$2200 to replace it so I went with a 04 Liberty..sad story turns good

I have a 2002 liberty with a big engine problem. It all started 4/8 - my chck engine light went on. I immediately brought it to a local mechanic since I have 75k miles on it & no more warranty. Code 304 - 4th cylinder misfiring...replaced the coil pack/full tune up. Next day, started up truck, engine light now flashes at me and you can hear the misfire. Shut it off, start it up, the engine light is back on, runs great. Bring it back to mechanic. He checks, again 4th misfiring. Replaces coil pack (defect he says), get it back. Runs great for 3 whole days. One morning, again, engine light flashes at me. Code 304 again. Shut if off, restart, runs great, light remains. Bring it back. Mechanic resets. Things look great. Have it back 1 day, again, but yet, code 302 - now its cylinder 2 misfiring. Damn. Bring it back. He replaces the coil pack in cylinder 2 - get it back. Very next morning, truck does not sound healthy. Engine light flashing at me...knock in the engine..doesn't sound good. Bring it back. 4th spit out my rocker arm and lifter for the push rod. Ok, fix it. Done. Next day, same thing. Ok, replace the rocker arm again, spring, lifter, coil pack. Got it back, didn't even drive 30 miles and check engine light is back. Take it home, next morning,...knock, knock, knock in the engine. Damn. Not liking codes 302 or 304. I just stole it back from my mechanic when the shop was closed...had it towed to a dealer now since it's obvious mechanic doesn't know Jeeps. Now it's sitting at a dealer and my worse fear..blown head gasket. Has anyone here had any problems like this or am I just cursed with a bad Jeep??? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I'm livid.

problems with 2007

Hi, hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on this. In January this year my '07 started to shudder badly when I had the vehicle stopped with the brake on, and the engine light came on solid. Only had about 8,000 miles on the odometer. The mechanic got a code 300 on it, "multiple cylinders misfiring". They replaced the injection coil for #2 cylinder. I then drove another 11,000 miles with only one incidence of noticeable shuddering, and maybe a couple of times the engine light came on solid, but cleared after a few driving cycles with no further shuddering. In the past 6 weeks, I've had about 3 times where it has shuddered on me and the engine light came on solid and cleared after a few driving cycles. I have also had a couple of instances where the engine light has come on and flashed 5 or 6 times and then stopped, while I was driving at about 45 mph, or slower. All of these occurrences are unpredictable. I've taken the Liberty in to the dealership twice in the past two weeks to get them to have a look. They can't find anything wrong, and what's worse is that the computer isn't registering any error codes! According to them, all I can do is see if there is some way that I can make it happen or to find some consistency with the events that cause it. I'm afraid I'm going to have to keep driving it until I do some real damage before they will know what to fix. My vehicle has no warranty (long sad story) so all of this is coming straight out of my pocket. If anyone here has any advice for me or any suggestions for what I can do, please share and give me some peace of mind. I'm going on a camping/4-wheeling trip in northern Maine this coming weekend. I love my Liberty!

what do you mean no warranty? it should have the 3/36! if it was bought new in the summer of 06 (earliest you can get an 2007) then it should have 1 year of warranty left! mike

lastly if you don't have the blinking cel (hard missfire) read with in 30-40 key cycles the pcm clears it. mike

thanks, Mike. Thats good to know. I will make sure I get the code read right away the next time it happens. The dealership tells me there isn't a way that I can read it myself on the '07s. I was trying to do the on/off thing to get the codes and probably cleared them as a result. The warranty issue is due to the fact that I exported the vehicle to Canada and Chrysler will not honour the warranty on this side of the border, or in the US since it is now a Canadian vehicle. Bunch of bull****, but that's the way it is.

The dealer is right, there's no way to read the codes yourself on the '07s. Gotta have a code scanner.

And yup, that's why you have no warranty...

At least you know where to start... cylinders are misfiring. So... spark plugs / coil / computer.
