I've seen more than that on mine and it is still running fine. As long as it is not in the engine its probably fine. The plastic fill tube is at the top of the engine so that is where it all collects, plus is doesn't get that hot.

Also, check you PCV valve if you are concerned. It could be the PCV valve needs to be changed. If the valve is not following correctly, then the damp condensation is just collection in the tube instead of brawn into the intake burnt off.

I have the same sludge on mine. I drive 4 miles to work so short trips is a factor.

There is a similar thread titled "Sludge in oil filer neck...." on lostkj.com

I added some oil into my engine yesterday and i found some yellow sludge as well. It was very little though.

So what is concidered to be a short trip? I drive about 4 miles to work one way. and then 10 miles one way to my girlfriends house. I do about an Avg of 30 miles on most days.

I would say it all has to do with the type of oil you use, the humidity in your area, and the amount of short trips you take. O:)

The book calls anything under 10 miles a "short trip"....atleast I think it's 10....could be 7, I'll have to look it up. I believe it's mentioned under the different service schedules.

I would definitely call 4 miles a short trip....the 10 mile commute to your girlfriend's house isn't bad at all.

Does your engine get completely warmed up before you reach the end of your 4 mile trip? If so, for roughly how long? If you do short distances, but you get it up to operating temp and it can stay there for a little bit before you get to your destination and shut it off, it helps to prevent sludge build up.

I'd be a little more concerned if you're adding oil to your 2006 model engine, unless you were doing an oil change?

Yes my engine completely warms up before I get to work and since it’s the winter it’s warmed up before I leave the house. For days I don’t warm it up before I leave, the engine is usually warmed up before I get on highways and thats the majority of the 4-5 miles i do to work.

I was adding oil to the engine because I had an oil change done at the local Firestone about week ago and I was checking the level. It needed like 1/2 quart. Witch is normal after an oil change.

The next oil change I’ll be doing myself and I plan on buy Mobil One Full Synthetic.

Since you say it gets warmed up before you get on the highway, and the majority of your commute is at highway speeds, I wouldn't be that concerned with it. I definitely recommend switching to synthetic though. It will help to prevent the sludge build up.

I think it would be interesting to take a poll regarding this. My question is, who has experienced this sludge that is running an aftermarket CAI vs. the factory air box or aftermarket filter such as the AEM Brute Force or K&N FIPK? I know I have seen this sludge before and I run a K&N FIPK. I also run strictly synthetic Mobil 1 when I change my own oil. I usually have seen this sludge during the winter when I use the Valvoline Oil change places. I always change my own oil while the weather is above freezing.

I have had it as well but not to that extent. It is collecting there cause it is the coolest part of the engine system plus the lowest pressure(some air leaks prolly out that cap). While a healthy engine doesn't reach 212f the airborne water being sucked into your engine is still vaporized and collects in that plastic pipe where it is trapped more or less.

Maybe cause yours is newish you have a tighter seal around the cap and us old guys runnin around are a little leakier and thus the water vapor is escaping more through that cap.

Are you Albert on lost?

If this is the first time using Pennzoil and this is the first time youve seen the sludge, I wouldnt use pennzoil anymore. :)

Jeepster.....yes and yes, and I was wondering how long it would take you to figure that out from my post. I thought about the pennzoil and also the fact that it sat in the garage almost a month without being driven when I was away. So I don't know what caused it but it is thick gooey slime and it bothers me. I think there was a long thread over there on it but I couldn't find it.

Albert is my middle name. When I first tried to log on over there I could not get it to take my first name....

I found the same sludge in there the last time I changed my oil. I didn't know what it was or what caused it but it still bothered me enough that I flushed the engine out before putting my new oil in.

I've used Pennzoil and Exxon Oil for years in my trucks that run on Dino Oil, and Mobil 1 in my 88 E-150. Once the 08 Liberty is broken in I will switch to Mobil 1. I never had a problem with Pennzoil. Short trips are going to cause condensation, there is no way around it. What I do is about 500 miles before an oil change I put 1/2 quart of Marvel Oil into the oil and drive the last 500 miles of the oil change interval. The Marvel will clean up sludge and varnish in the engine. I've taken valve covers off Fords with well over 150,000 miles on them and they are still clean.

At least I'm not alone... took the '05 to the local place for an oil change and they came out with a whole lot of goop on the filler cap. Very concerning... I'll be hitting up the dealer to make sure nothing serious is going on.

Never had this issue before, most of my driving is long highway commutes, and the dealer was the last one to put oil in it... so it should be the recommended stuff.

I checked my oil the other day and there was infact just a 'hint' of yellow stuff on the bottom of the oil cap. It wasnt a built up, just a light coating of yellow poo. Ive not been driving my Jeep much at all but its been in the teens and 20's alot lately. I do not drive short trips that often but lately its only been driven once a week. Not worried at all though.
