Here's an easy way to determine why the check engine light is coming on.

Turn the key to the accessory position then off
then accessory then off
then accessory...

(Basically, three cycles of accessory/off, ending up in the accessory position.)

At this point, in the odomoder area, you will see a code that corresponds to the error code.

Alternate Method
ADDED BY GROGIEFROG: There is another way that only works on my 2004:
Start with the ignition off. Within five seconds, switch the key on, off, on, off, on. ("On" is NOT "Start" and "Off" is NOT "Lock").

Bit off topic - Test for Gauges
-----
1. Hold in the trip reset button.
2. Turn key to ON position.
3. Release trip reset button.
4. Gauge and Lamp test begins
5. When odometer is finished counting codes display
6. Test is done when you see a Software Version number (e.g. 6.4) and Odometer returns to normal.

I'm trying to add to this list, when members here have a solution to a code, or more explanation to whats wrong, I can edit the codes post to have a link to this document. So if anyone has any thoughts, either reply here, or PM me.

Example:
<TABLE><tr><td bgcolor="#dddddd">442</td><td bgcolor="#dddddd">A leak has been detected in the evaporative system!
JeepKJ Note:Check your gas cap</td></tr> </TABLE>

Thanks much!!!!

6.0

I ran the test, had to use Method 2, 1st one didn't work.

Ran through the cycle and it ended with a 6.0; I don't see that listed or is that equivilent to 600 (and I've got a computer error!)?

Check engine lights been on for a couple weeks now, don't notice any difference in performance though. This happened a couple years ago and it ended up being loose gas cap. I've checked that, and don't think thats the problem this time.

Oh yeah...

There have been reports that this method wont work with \'04s, if anyone has feedback on this, post here.

Did the on/off thing 3 times on my `04 and it worked. My check engine light came on last week at GWNF and it runs fine. I got code 0038...

Mike

[Edit]Did some research and found this here: P0038 - HO2S Heater Control Circuit High Bank 1 Sensor 2[/Edit]

Update 8/8/05: I had the dealership look at it and they stated on their report: "Tech found 02 Sensor not staying centered. Replaced 02 Sensor assy." Fixed under warranty.

Codes on '03 Liberty Limited

I tried both methods mentioned above and wasn't able to retrieve any codes. First method yielded nothing and the second ended with a 1.4 which I'm assuming is the software version and then it went right to the miles on odometer. Do I have to go buy an OBD II reader?

Neither one of these worked for me either. If you have a Autozone or Advanced Auto parts by you, you can simply stop in and they will read your code for you for free with their reader. That's what I did. Save yourself some $

thanks man, I just might do that. Only thing is the truck is stalling, don't know if I'll make it there.

I have an 02 and I tried method one and it didn't work. However, it did work with a slight variation. You stated that the cycle should end in the accessory position but nothing on my instrument cluster lights in that position. So, I started in the OFF position and cycled three times to the ON position. Viola =D>

code P0116 help?

I've got an 04 Libby with 39,000 miles on it. Recently on a very hot day, I started my Jeep up and the check engine light came on. It gave me a code P0116 which is listed simply as a CTS in the Chilton's manual. I am assuming that this is basically the same as an ECT sensor, just called something different. Should I just drop a new one in, or are there some other tests I should do first? Is this common for the LIbby, and how much did you pay for the part?

P0441 is still driving me crazy, it is going away and then coming back on after a while... I checked the hoses, I cannot see anything wrong visibly.
