I bought my Liberty at a dealership I worked at and when I pulled the file I found this little message.

"Preform Safety Inspection. All Is Good. Repair Fog Lamp Wiring. Found Ignition Cylinder Binding. Still Under Warranty."

from what I think it reads, this problem wasn't fixed. I don't know what exactly Ignition Cylinder Binding is, but I have had the vehicle for 9 months now, and done about 16,000 KM.

I forgot about this and hope it is not a big deal. Like I said I don't know what it means, and don't know what could be going on, so can someone please let me know, and what I should do.

I am getting bad gas mileage, but wasn't when it was first bought. Could this ICB be a causing the problem of bad mileage?

I am not a mech and probably sound like a noob, please help.

Either that or the switch is hard to turn and might need some lube.

I don't think this would hurt gas mileage. lol3.gif

This may sound stupid but check your tire pressure, plugs, replace air filter excetra.

I started running with my tires at 32 psi, instead of the reccomended 28, and got much better milage. I ahve heard of some running around 40! Thats to much for me. Plus I added a KN filter and one of those tornado things in the intake. With 235/70 16's Wrangler ATD2's I was getting about 20-22 mpg depending on how I drove it. I have found that tire pressure really makes a difference.

I went to M/T R's and now I am down to about 17-19 mpg.

Thanks for the info.

My tire pressure on the BFG All Terrain Ko's is always at "recommended pressure of 35psi" Not sure if I should try more?

I checked my air filter and its fine, was done 16,000km ago.. still looks fine, but I bought a new one to try.

Going to get the spark plugs changed soon, could be the reason... they need done around this time anyways... im at 48,000km.

I can't think of anything else at this time, if anyone wants to ad something to check, or about my tire pressure, good ahead.

So far so good with the vehicle.. I know they don't get good mileage, but common... just city is "supossed to be 19 mpg" so I don't know whats up, could be my foot... :D

I can't wait to get my lift and hopefully some new tires, but then again I don't wanna see what my mileage is gonna be if I am already hitting low 15-16mpg... scary thought.

I don't believe ICB would be a cause of bad MPG.

Seriously, make sure the steering wheel is "relaxed" not putting pressure on the lock mechanism.

oh
its the ignition switch, spray some lock cleaner if you feel it to be an issue.

the MPG drop is in your head :D unless you keep turning the vehicle on and off repeatedly trying to see how bad your ignition cylinder binds :p JK

Some of the earlier-released chrysler ignition locks had this problem. There was a TSB a while back for Grand Cherokees (somewhere in the realm of 99-01ish). Doesn't mean it can't happen on a liberty.

Just make sure your key isn't worn looking (any brass showing on the blade of the key, excluding where the key is actually cut), preferebly use an original key, and you should be ok.

I'm currently having the same problem with mine.....The key get stuck at least one time everyday.....I'm going back at the dealer tuesday and they will check it out. I bought that jeep 2 weeks ago with 21,320 kms so there's no way I'm paying a dime to get that fixed.....
