What's with the little sponge that sits inside the air filter box? I noticed it yesterday when I took my K&N out for cleaning.

So that's where SpongeBob has been hiding all this time!!!!!

anyway...I don't have that little sponge? Where exactly did you see it and how big is it? Left over from an operation? Surgeon error, maybe.

I think it has something to do with filtering the air from the PCV. Keeping oil out of the airbox... something of the sort.

You SHOULD have that sponge!!!

There's no sponge in mine at least that I've noticed (mine is the stock setup though).

Maby it's part of the K&N setup.

Ok, you are right it is there, I actually thought you had something at the bottom or right beneath the filter like a sponge filter kind of thing. It is there, towards the engine, on the side.

Oh boy, my filter is filthy!

Wait a minite....I just went out and double checked. I do have it. "spongebob" is in a plastic holder and the line in front of it does go to the pcv vale. Marlon is correct.

Can you spot the grease on top of the intake hood.. (whatever that's called). I can't believe these dealers. They make a mess everywhere.

Ok back to the topic, what is the purpose of that sponge there? Looks like it is pre-filter for bigger stuff!? It looks like it absorbs humidity or moisture? How about a pack of good old silica instead?

There he is! Nice clean airbox. Mine has mud and salt in it thanks to the dumb 2.8L setup. I still haven't found a 3.7L Airbox and snorkel. Blah.

Can I clean stock filter? Or should I just replace it with cheap-o-filter from Strauss auto?

Just dust it off . Tap the steel mesh side on a tree - lightly - to get any loose dirt out and put it back in. Next time you go out buy a replacement.

Marlon, I just saw your theory above, hiding behind sponge bob's hat. Sorry.

You would figure when a stealership charges you $400 for "Tune Up" he replaces a $10 air filter with a $5 one, at least. Damn. I wanted to get K&N but shipping was too high, and nobody sells it around here.

It went up to 15.2 last week after 1 day 120 miles of driving.

Marlon is correct about spongeBob. I recently replaced my entire PCV tubing because it broke in half while replacing my spark plugs. Well while taking a look into exactly what this tubing does it has a proper use.

The PCV valve on the other hand or Positive Crankcase Ventilation system functions as the old "dump tube" which removes combustion gases and vapors that may get stuck in the piston rings and crankcase that can cause rust, corrosion and bogs.

SpongeBob filters the crap flowing through the valve while giving it air to breath.

Its Just A Filter For The Pvc Valve Since The Pvc Suckes A Lil Bit Of Oil Residue . Just Every Once In A While When Cleaning Your Air Filter Just Take Some Brake Clean And Sprayit Down And Your All Set

So where can I buy a SpongeBob LibertyPants at? Mine is all dirty, kinda greasey on the bottom but clean on the top 3/4. I took my K&N out and damn is it dirty but the intake is super clean.
