So we have all had bad experiences with our dealership in some way or another. Well I just received my ball joint recall notice in the mail this week. THIS WEEK? Wow, I was fortunate to get the recall notice done last year. However, many people have not had that advantage and the dealerships are not talking why its taking so long. Dealerships say that they only receive 3 ball joints a day. As a person in auto manufacturing I can see the extent at which the manufacturer must stretch to timely get these ball joints out. But 3 per dealership and months to get a very big SAFETY recall fixed??

CONSUMER COMPLAINT: ODI Case Number: 10182646

Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT

Details: I RECENTLY RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF A SAFETY RECALL FOR MY 2004 JEEP LIBERTY WITH REGARD TO THE LOWER BALL JOINTS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT WATER MAY ENTER INTO THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINTS ON MY JEEP. THIS CAN CAUSE THE BALL JOINT TO CORRODE AND SEPARATE. BALL JOINT SEPARATION CAN RESULT IN A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. I CONTACTED MY DEALERSHIP IN ORDER TO GET THE PART ORDERED AND LINE UP AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE REPAIRS COMPLETED. THE DEALERSHIP WAS CONTACTED ON 01/24/07..THE DAY AFTER I FIRST RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF THE SAFETY ISSUE. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY WOULD ORDER THE PART AND CALL ME TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT TO AS SOON AS THE PART CAME IN. I HAD NOT HEARD FROM THE DEALERSHIP, SO I CALLED THEM ON 02/13/07 TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE "ORDERED" PART. THERE WAS NO RECORD OF A PART BEING ORDERED. THEREFORE, I PLACED THE ORDER AGAIN ON THAT DAY AND ASKED IF SOMEONE COULD CALL ME BACK TO GIVE ME AN IDEA OF WHEN I COULD BE SCHEDULED FOR AN APPOINTMENT AND HOW LONG IT WOULD TAKE FOR THE PART TO COME IN. I HAVE NOT BEEN CONTACTED SINCE THAT LAST CALL. I WAS TOLD BY THE PHONE ATTENDANT AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE MANUFACTURER IS ONLY SENDING THE SERVICE AREA 3 BALL JOINTS AT A TIME--AND THAT IS WHY ITS TAKING SO LONG FOR ME TO BE SERVICED. I ASKED THE ATTENDANT HOW SERIOUS WAS THIS RECALL AND IF I WAS IN ANY DANGER. SHE ASKED ME IF MY CAR WAS OPERATING PROPERLY AND I TOLD HER YES TO MY KNOWLEDGE IT WAS, AND SHE TOLD ME THAT I WAS PROBABLY OK. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW WHY IT IS TAKING SO LONG TO HAVE MY CAR SERVICED AND SHOULD THE DEALERSHIPS BE TAKING SUCH A CAVALIER APPROACH TO THIS RECALL? *JB

THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 3 MONTHS!! IF THIS CAN CAUSE A CRASH WHY ARE THE PARTS NOT BEING MADE AVAILABLE? *NM

This is why DCx can never become the number 1 car maker in the states, or elsewhere for that matter.

1 year, come on. Same for me, I had it done last year and just got my letter a few months ago.

They are dragging the Jeep name and others, for that matter, through the mud of BAD BAD BAD customer service, or just Service--- or lack of for that matter.

I hate Jeep Dealers. I love my Jeep.

I guess I got lucky. I read about the recall here, so I called the dealer and asked them about it. They told me to bring it right over, and within a few hours it was fixed. I actually received the notification about a week after it was repaired.

lucky.

Plus, the dealers in big cities are always messier and snottier than other places, because they don't need you, you need them.

That's funny, because you'd think with the sheer number of dealers in the NYC area, you'd get better service due to competition. I guess it doesn't work that way.

Atleast you got a notice. I had mine done in October, and STILL have not got a notice in the mail yet.

As far as getting an appointment goes, mine went fairly smooth. I called them, mentioned it, and set up an appointment to have the work done 3 weeks later, as that was the earliest they could get me in. It was a matter of they threw it out of alignment and didn't want to put it back that made me ill, and turned into a huge fight. Made a nice little post about it for those who'd like to ready my story.

Don't worry Tim, it'll show up in the next month or so. I just got the notice for mine a couple of weeks ago, which was fine by me since I already had them done back in September \:D/ I was getting ready to go on a run with some other KJ owners and went to check mine, noticed the drivers sidee had a bit of play in it so I called a dealer the following Monday and got scheduled for the next day - told them I was concerned with the amount of play I was seeing and they got me right in.

Dealers in Indy suck man, haven't you figured that out? Everytime my Jeep gets sick or needs something, I am hosed. Best I have found so far has been Westgate Jeep near Plainfield in Western Indy, but they are not exactly all that good, either. Just avoid any dealer on the south side at all costs, they are the worst, especially O'Brien
