Well, on my way to my Dad's house this past wed. (27th) I was rear-ended at a stop light while heading up the Berlin Tpke. in East Berlin, CT. Here's the aftermath.

Basically, this road is a 50MPH zone, i'm guessing the guy that hit me was probably doing 55-60 at least before he slammed on the brakes. Unfortunately, not quite soon enough. He swerved to try to get into the left-turn lane to my left, but didn't quite make it there. I don't have any pictures of his truck as of yet, and i may not get any, being as both the trucks are in CT, and i live in NJ. but we'll see, i know the cops took some pictures, maybe i can get some from them. The impact was enough to knock the faceplate out of my stereo and set off his airbag. he apparently smoked the clutch trying to downshift to slow the truck down. His little Ranger is MUCH worse for wear than my KJ. It looks almost like his whole front clip shifted to the driver's side. the coolant bottle popped, his clutch is gone, the passenger's side fender is toast, and the same with the right-front suspension. the hood might be fixable, but i'm guessing the insurance company is just gonna total his truck. As for the KJ, well it's looking like it's gonna need a new bumper, fender, rear-end, taillight, wheel and a couple pther little trim peices. The best thing is that no one got seriously hurt (i don't think). I mean, they hauled him off to the hospital in an ambulance, but he had gotten himself out of his truck, his lip was split, but for the most part i think he's fine. So, my visit to NH was cut short quite a bit by this little mishap, but i did get my skids for x-mas, but, with no truck to put them on, they're kinda useless. The estimate i got from the guy who towed my truck was probably 5-6K worth of damage and about 3 weeks to fix it, needless to say, this is gonna be one HUGE pain in the @$$!!!

Sorry mate, it looks like it was a pretty bad impact. He even bent your rim! I wouldn't trust that tire either, so better check for nicks. I hope you get your jeep back soon, and here is to a safe and impact free new year.

Yeah, the Merritt can be a rough road. We affectionately call it the Merritt International Speedway around here, because the posted limits are rarely observed and the lack of any big trucks make it a quicker local route than 91.

Sorry to see the damage, glad you are ok though.

Man I hate to hear this....

Get a rental, something comparable to your KJ (enterprise has KJ's!!!)....and get his insurance company to cover the rental for you....you are most certainly entitled to one, after all, YOU are the victim, and YOU are being inconvenienced due to another drivers' carelessness. He does have insurance right?

That left tire looks awful close to the front of the wheel well.....are you sure he didn't shift the axle? I see that the wheel is bent up pretty good. At the very least, I would imagine the hub is bent on that side of the axle.

Yeah my liberty was hit in almost the same spot a few months ago and it was about 3500 dollars, BUT somehow the kid who hit my jeep didnt hit the back bumper? just the quarter panel and light. but that quater panel goes for like $1200 by itself! (i also hope he didnt do any damage to the tailgate cause that would make it sOOO much worse) and mine was also PARKED outside my house and it was hit, so i didnt have the headache you have im sure!

Sorry to hear about this. I do love the Merritt tho, its a fun road to drive. But it is inherently dangerous..... entrance ramps with stop signs... come on!

Yeah, i'm a fan of the merritt myself, i take it all the time to go visit my dad in NH. Yes, the axle tube is bent for sure, i'm not sure if it's at the pumpkin or more towards the control arm, but either way, the whole rear-end needs to be replaced. As for the tailgate, it still functions properly, along with the flip-glass and all the doors. Enterprise is the rental car company of choice for New Jersey Manufacturer's (my insurance company), however, i'm only 18, and their policy is 21, so even if i can get a KJ for a while, my mom will be driving it, while i'm stuck driving her equinox (i'm SOOO thrilled about that #-o ) And not to worry, i will make sure that his insurance company pays for EVERYTHING, even the dinner my parents and I had in CT when we met back up so i could come back down from NH. With all the force that the tire took, i'm surprised it didn't blow out. It obviously took enough of a hit to bend the wheel AND the axle, but it still holds air, I have a new-found trust in these General tires, needless to say, i'm gonna try to see if i can get a new set out of this, and maybe some black Cragar steelies. [-o< Most of all though, i just want my Jeep back, it's my pride and joy and i've poured countless hours into it in modifications and maintenance. Failing that (if they total it), i'll try to shop around for another KJ, maybe a black one.

Glad you're ok!

Speaking as someone who grew up in CT about 1.7 miles from the Merritt, if you are coming from NJ, I would suggest you take 287 across White Plains and then pick up 684 north to 84 east, to the Mass pike (90) and then take the route north into NH of your choice. It will be much faster.

Wow. The important thing is you're ok.

I must say, I love driving the Merritt. Not so much in an SUV, but definitely in my cars. Love those twisties. Ironically, despite having such a great road to drive on, IMO CT is full of the worst drivers in the union (Mass-holes are a close second). No offense to any CT/MA'ers...
