Will my stock tires be okay for winter?

I am curious how many of you have run the stock 225 Wrangler STs for any length of time and how they will be this winter. They don't look all that impressive and Pittsburgh gets its fair share of snow.

I fully intend to upgrade to better treads in the spring but right now dropping $500-$700 on tires is not an option for me.

As long as you play it safe and slow when driving you *should* be okay with them. However, IMHO they are crap. I took mine off at 10K and never looked back. I put on Bridgestone Dueller Revos while stock and they worked awesome!! If you have to wait do it. Just keep it slow and safe when driving on your stock tires.

I had no problems with the stock tires last year in the winter time. I didn't even really use 4wd very much at all. I did blast through some snow banks and try to have to use the 4wd, but it was only 12" deep or so, which didn't really require it.

All in all, you should be fine. I am going to put some BFG all terrains on it, but I figure whats the use throwing away a good set of tires, so next year they will get the new ones on.

I have goodyear sr-a's on my renegade and i was able to make it thru last winter just fine here in wisconsin. Im hoping to have some extra money soon to buy some revo's before this winter comes.

With your tires being as new as they are, you should be fine this winter. Not to mention you have the ESP, which only helps things.

I really never drove on anything but my Wrangler HPs, they seem do grab OK in the deep snow, but do poor on ice. I was planning to change them before this winter, but no dough, no new tires for me this year.. I am waiting to get to 40 or even 50 k before I do. 235/65 r17

Actually, for as much as I hated my stock GSAs I thought they handled quite nicely in the snow... mine were 235 stock though.

I think any tire will do poor on ice... \/

not a skating ring type of ice. we get what's called freezing rain, so there is a lot of slush on the pavement, while some other tires claim to do good on it, these wranglers don't. They tend to slip and slide a lot. So that's the kind of ice i am talking about.

Unless any tires have good size studes, they'll slide on ice. Ice is Ice and rubber is rubber when you put the 2 together. I always chuckle when I see someone call tires crappy because they slide on ice. [-(

I know what you mean, I should have said icy slush maybe..
