I'd get a refund, and a new set joints! :)

The automaker recalled more than 300,000 2002-2003 Liberty vehicles in November 2003 because of problems with the ball joint, but some of the parts were damaged during the shipping process or installation.

What...The....F

The tell us now but we must wait till September for them to contact us.

How many people are going to get hurt or worse yet die because their wheel falls off at 80 mph?

Well they need to still generate all the paperwork, make the parts, and inform all the people. It could be sooner though for some of us. Or, maybe you can take the Jeep into the dealership before receiving anything and they will do it (Yea right).

Are they replacing the actual ball joints, and are they going to have a lifetime warranty?

I didnt even know what the hell a ball joint was until I came across this forum and saw the numerous threads about the subject.

I am certainly not car-savy enough to examine mine myself, so Ill be depending on the stealership to let me know the deal.

I would hope they replace the BJ and not just put a bandaide on it..

To the service department we all go!

My question does not pertain to me. For those of you who already replaced the ball joints do you know if you can go in and get them done again? I am only directing this to the ones who have replaced the ball joint through the dealership with a 2002 and up.

I would only assume that the dealership replaced the ball joint with the same manufactured one. The "NEW" manufactured ball joint should be stronger??? So the dealership should automatically replace them again. Also, you should get a refund from your previous ball joint replacements (if you paid them). Just my opinion along with a question or so.

Wow....more questions than answers right now. Seems like everything is all "up in the air" until the formal recall comes out and then the dealers will be up to their eyeballs in ball joints??

I wonder once you get the recall if you can have the dealership put the Moogs in and just pay the difference.

You all must understand, 832,000 balljoints X2 is ALOT of balljoints!! Thats 1,664,000 balljoints!! I would say thats more than moog has even made for the libbys.

This recall overrides the last recall and any sort of other history with your Jeep.

They *have* to do the recall. So I hope the new owners of my 2004, which can be seen here

Link to a very nice and famous 2004 Liberty

Take the Jeep in, EVEN THOUGH I Just had the ball joints replaced back in June.

[sorry, edited post..was too long horizontally -=JoN=-]

DC/Jeep will be pretty busy over the next year(s) replacing all those LBJ's, not to mention the expense. It will be interesting to see if they will offer to, or be required to reimburse, or at least partially reimburse those
of us who went to the trouble to install Moogs or paid Jeep to have the factory LBJ's replaced.

JeepnJer on another thread made a good point about the GC and its front suspension. Maybe instead of a revised LBJ, we'll be getting a new lower control arm that will revise the stress that the suspension absorbs.

I will try yto answer as best as I can, BUT I am still under a confidentiality agreement so some will be labeled "No Comment".

QUOTE(scook6 @ Aug 2 2006, 04:37 PM)
As a proud owner of one of the Liberty's in question, trying to cut through the innuendo etc.

What exactly is causing these failures? The joints are wearing out as predicted, according to projected criteria.

This is just a passing observance, since you can no longer put grease in these and they are "permanently lubed for life" are they dry and wearing out? No, that is an incorrect assumption. The specifications were changed, the durability cycles were changed, as well as the loading factors, all downwards from standard JTE specs. This was to follow a directive to reduce cost of SUV parts, because, as so many people have noted here, SUV's ain't used offroad generally. The point is, the joints have a full lifetime as designed and predicted. The issue is not with the parts being poorly made, the issue is A WRONG SPEC IS USED.

According to Bob, this seems to have originated by an argument between management and a now retired engineer? No- the Executive Engineer (just below VP of Engineering) of Vehicle Development (who was an old Jeep guy) and Financial (which had the backing of Bob Eaton).

So is this a design flaw? NO, the parts meet the spec.

What makes these ball joints so different than all the others out there? The wrong spec was used.

Or worse are they made by a supplier who is sending DCX shoddy parts? Again, there is NOTHING wrong with the parts-they perform exactly as predicted. The issue is with the specs.

Now for the really tough one. What company is making these? That seems to be the big mystery here. NO COMMENT, and it is really of no importance because they are not the problem.

Best regards....

I'm confused. (Aeh)
If the LBJ's are not the problem, then that mean there's too much stress load and the lower arms are the problem because of inproper placement.

I don't think the resale will be greatly affected. Keep the performed recall receipt if you sell. I think "NOT" having the recall would easily affect resale, especially since the word was spreading on the street about the LBJ's of the LIBS.
