I'm about ready to get tires on the '05 renegade and I am just about sold on the revos, but have a question. Are revos better than bfg all terrain ta's? Also, is there anything else that I should look at?

My wife will be driving about 25,000 a year, but I want a good wet/snow traction tire.

Thanks everyone,
Doug

p.s. it has 225 75 16 now, but I'm planning on going to 235 70 16, unless you guys chime in otherwise.

you can go up to 245/70R16 no problems at all , IMHO it looks nices as your filling in the wheel wells with a bit more tyre if you have a look around here and lost there is heaps of picks of will the 245/70's fit no rub ,

i can say the do fit and they dont rub,

now onto the next question

BFG's or Revos

i have had Both on my 04

REVO = quiet ride AWESOME wet traction but i got about 45,000 kilometers out of mine

BFG AT = a little more noisy than the revo far stiffer construction ( 3 Ply sidewall) but they look like they are going to wear like iron i have 15000 kilometers on mine so far and they still look new ( apart from the gouges and nicks in the sidewalls from playing on rocks laugh.gif

I don't know if anyone would even install an overstock size tires around me. Most places have signs advising not to even ask, a least places I would go to.

As for the wear factor, if revos melt away that fast I'm not sinking that kind of money into them. You mentioned the bfg's wear longer, but how is the wet, snow (if you guys get that down there), and mud traction. Noise isn't a factor, that's what the radio is for.

Thanks for letting pick your brain!

no snow where i am ( its about 800 miles away )

wet weather the bfg's are ok i can spin them if i am too heavy on the skinny pedal ( but no where as easy as the SRA's that it came with) the revos were much better in the wet ,

mud the bfg's and revos are about the same in mud

Well I went and got some prices. The below prices are for 8 tires mounted, balanced, tax, disposal fees, road hazard and alignment checks.

I'm getting 8 because the tires on both KJ's suck. The '05 has the stockers still and the '02 has Wal-Mart Liberator AT's.

I skidded into the rear end of someone and since then increased the following distance. Good thing because a rainy day not long ago I slid a good 10-15 feet on wet pavement. That would be the Liberators and they have about half the tread left on them.

The Goodyears suck just as bad with 21,000 on them, I have to use 4wd or go very light on the gas not to spin them on wet pavement.

BFG A/T KO = $1439.88
Dueler Revos = $1370.00

So, price wise not a whole lot of differance. Here's were I need you guys to chime in.

Which ones?

a bunch of us are really happy with the General Grabber AT2's. They have the same tread pattern as the BFG AT's, but come with a 60,000 mile warantee, where the BFG's have no warantee, and the General Grabbers are half the price.

I would go BFG over the revo, but that is just my opinion. If I was buying as many tires as you are, then the general grabbers are the way to go.

I looked for the Grabbers, but I can't find a dealer around here. I went to two dealers listed on General's website, but both said they don't sell General tires.

Where did you find them? I find shops that carry General, but they say they can't order the grabbers?

Most of the local tire shops said they could order them. I went to the one closest to my house, and they had them on the lot within 16 hours of my request. If they can order General's, then they should be able to order the Grabber AT2's.

You can always get them at www.tirerack.com

I was thinking about online, but what happens if one needs to be replaced under the road hazard? I have had tire balance and rotation plans put on cars that I've picked up used, so that doesn't worry me.

I saw that Discount Tire is in Dayton, and was going to call them in 20 min (they open at 8) about the Grabbers. They stock 4 other General's in my size.

If they can order the Grabbers, I'm thinking I could get 10 of them in 245 70 16 for what 8 of the others will run (maybe less).

Thanks for all the help so far guys.

The general grabbers do not have the same tread pattern as the BFGs, they just look similar. No to be confused with similar performance, as they do not stand up to the BFGs.

As far as the traction rating the BFG ATs score VERY high on "all terrains" , much as the name implies.

If by stand up you mean they don't loose their tread as quickly, then you are right...General's last quite a bit longer.

If you actually do the research, you will find that every review of the General AT2's is overwhelmingly possitive, with the exception of deep mud performance, which is no better than the BFG AT's.

I have owned both, and looked at them side by side. You would be hard pressed to see a difference in tread pattern. Having driven both, on and off road, I can't see any reason to spend the extra money on the BFG's.

The fact that there are positive reviews is not a good way to compare two tires.

I don't really have any other arguement than that though.

But I still have yet to see any AT tire that can beat the BFG ATs head to head.

I will not contest the tread wear though, I expect no more than 35k from my BFGs, but that is when they'll no longer be Offroad worthy. I imagine that I could get a bit more if the rest of the driving was just road.

Anyway, budget is always the only limit in upgrading so whatever fits your budget is your ideal tire.

The above is just the kind of discussion I'm looking for, keep it coming. I agree that budget should be a limiting factor, but in for a penny in for a pound. Why buy substandard, when you could get premium for a little extra (isn't that why we bought KJ's instaed of Hyundai's or Kia's?). That being said, no sense in waisting money either.

So if the grabbers are comperable to the bfg's, then to me they are more desireable.

I spoke with discount tire and they will match the tirerack price. So here are my options so far:

BFG A/T KO 235 70 16, 8 of them out the door = $1439.85
Revo's 235 70 16, 8 of them out the door = $1370.00
Grabber's 245 70 16, 10 of them out the door = $1187.00

Now, two questions.
1. What is the better deal, in your oppinion?
2. I think it will be ok, but will the 245's rub at all? Thier going on an '05 and a pre-lowered '02.

To be honest, I like the idea of getting 10 new tires for less than what 8 of the others go for.

As a side note, the guy at discount tires was very eager to match the tirerack price. He also mentioned that he test drove a set of the grabbers at a trade show, and he said he was very impressed. According to him in order for the tires to be displayed in the trade show, they had to prove they met a very high standard.

He made a point to mention that general is trying to rebuild the brand name, after a mangement shake up (because quality declined). He said that he wouldn't be surprised if the tires went from the current $78 a tire, up to around $130 a tire in the next 6 months.

The most important thing to remember is that you get what you pay for; but you don't always use what you get.

Whichever of the Libertys is going to be primarily offroad should get the BFGs, put the generals on the other if you just want to save some cash.

You can get lower on the price for the BFGs is you talk to them too, They can quite easily sell those tires for $160 a piece.

I paid just over $165 ea for my 265/70 BFGs at DT. Including mounting, balancing, free tire rotation for life, and I kept all 5 of my stock take-offs.

It is really hard to say anything bad about the BFG's because they are great tires. The General's are really good tires too, and like was previously mentioned have a much better mileage warantee, and are much cheaper...

Now throw in the fact that buy getting all ten for less money you are also extending the life of your tires by as much as 20% since you will be able to do a real 5 tire rotation.

This is a no brainer for me.

With proper rotation, you should easily get 80K miles if not more out of the BFG AT's. Look at alot of your re-treads, their BFG Carcases.
