I know this has been covered before but all things change.

I am thinking satellite and knowing a little about this technology I am tending toward Sirius. Any opinions that would sway me?

If I do go for Sirius which is the best receiver?

If you convince me that XM is the better choice which receiver for it?

I would want a receiver that could be either mobile or in the house.

Thanks in advance.

I have Sirius, and love it.

I have the basic Sportster and it works well for me. When at home, I have centrally-located in the house and can pick it up on all FM radios.

When on the go, I have the boom box. A little bulky, but it works well, too.

Running the antenna from the house to an exterior wall was a chore, but it's done.

I have XM and love it. There are a number of offers availale on the friends and family program that allow you to get the hardware for a significant discount, the only catch is that you have to prepay for the first 3 months and commit to 6 months.

I would say, forgetting the hardware for a moment, the content is more important. Look at the channels that are available and see whats available on each, and how they fit in with what you're all about. XM offers a free (I think 14 day?) trial, which includes many, although not all channels online. That would be one way to preview whats available.

There are a number of good recievers out there, and most really just depend on what you want out of it. Sirius, as far as I know, does not yet have a reciever that you can use like a walkman. XM has a number of them - you can just strap it on and listen to live satellite radio while walking, etc. Sirius has a number of units that can RECORD while docked, but cannot stream live satellite radio.

The reciever I have is a simpler one, the Delphi SkyFi, it has docks available for home and car. Thru the friends and family program you can get the reciever with kits for home and car for $60. This one doesnt do mp3s or anything fancy, but it can cache 30 minutes of playback.

The XM2GO bundles (the ones you can listen to live while walking) sell for around $180 with the friends/family program.

If you're interested, PM me and I'll get you the details, I dont want to post them here.

Do you actually ever LISTEN to a football game? I guess I'm biased, XM has MLB, and there are a lot of MLB games when I'm on the road, so its cool for me. Plus opie & anthony..... Fred, Ethel, and Lucy...... :)

As I said tho, it's all about content. See which fits you best.

yup, I travel a lot on sunday's for monday morning meetings. I listen to the NFL quite a bit, and since I am out of my teams market area, many games aren't televised in my area, so listening to them on Sirius is my only option!

I had XM and got rid of it for Sirius. I like the music play patterns better and the receiver (Sportster Replay) is much better too. For either service, I would not recommend the portable handheld receivers that are supposedly like an iPod. I had the MyFi and it was absolutely horrible. I contacted Delphi and they flat out said it was poorly designed and that was why it would be discontinued soon. But, I recommend Sirius definitely.

I don't have either, but after doing some research and talking to people that have both setup's I would go with Sirius.

I would recomend Sirius.. I have XM.... I guess I am lazy..and don't want to buy new equipment..

I got XM because at the time, it was the cheaper option....

They nixed acouple of my fav channels.. They have since brought back one... but Siruis aperiently wont just nix a channel with out letting you knwo at first. I just turned on XM one day .. and it was gone

That was not fun

I think the sound quality of Sirius may be better

Sirius has Howard Stern
Shade 45
XM on my directTV plays the same songs quite a bit.
Sirius in my car's doesn't seem to do it as often.
Plus, living in KY, it is nice to listen to NFL games when I am away from my NFL Sunday Ticket.

SIRIUS ALL THE WAY. The factory set-up in the Lib with the RB1 is awesome, but pricey. Check out the new Sportster 4, it is the next generation Sportster and much smaller than the last two versions.

Very cool. I didn't realize the Sportster 4 was out yet. I just bought my Sportster Replay, so that's not in my budget any time soon though. I'm gettin' my Frankenlift, skids, and rock rails first. \:D/

What are the differences with the Sportster 4?
Right now I have an Alpine head unit, and a tuner, so I listen to Sirius through an aux input. Sounds excellent, but I would like the features that come with the plug and play style radio

Is there any major difference with Sportster 4 besides size?
When is it available?

It's available now for $169. I features cooler operation, infinite FM transmit frequencies, and the ability to save those frequencies.

Thanks for the info and $20 dollar code. I could pick up this new sportster and add a home kit for just over $200 bucks - $20 rebate and free shipping (taxes too).

Thanks a lot for this info. Now to convince the better half or just sneak it in and say "Wow look at this, thanks honey!!"

The home kit and boombox may not be available yet, but should be very soon. You could always add a Prepaid Sirius Card that can be applied directly to your new or existing subscription.

In my opinion Sirius has better channels and music, plus it has Howard Stern, NFL, Bam and other talk channels that I honestly don't listen to. Note that only the music channels are commercial free on Sirius, not the talk channels. Clear Channel made a large investment in XM early on and as a result they have started airing commericals on music channels on XM. Technically, Sirius should have better coverage in the woods as they have satellites in a higher orbit than XM, but XM will have better coverage in cities as they have more ground based repeaters. Sirius can be factory integrated with the Liberty while XM can't. I'd personally choose Sirius mainly because I like the programming more and it's truly commercial free music. If you have broadband you can listen to both services online for free for three days via their respective websites.
