Slight Rattle

Okay all!! I am posting a question before I post the pics because I do not currently have my Camera to upload the pictures from my new lift!!

Hence, I would like to ask if anyone has experienced a slight rattle from the rear after 2" or more lift? It sounds like a window rattle as if the tailgate glass is not fully locked. I have opened my tailgate and tugged slightly on it to find if it was loose but it was good. I pushed up and down on my rear bumper while I had a friend sit in it with windows up and doors closed, couldn't hear it!! I'm now wondering if its only when I'm driving (wheel turn, etc...)

I had this problem in the rear gate where one of the plastic clips that held the trim on was loose and it caused this irritating rattle. In the end I just replaced the mounting clip.

When the rear shocks were installed, were the spacers (big washers) used to keep them snug in the mounting points? When I had my lift installed, the spacers were overlooked and there was movement of the shocks in the mounts. This created a low rumble when moving. After the spacers were put in, the noise stopped. If you can move the shocks side to side then you need the spacers, both upper and lower.

Whoa, OK, THAT rattle. I had completely forgotten about it, and I just got used to it over time.

Yes, I DO have that rattle, and YES, it's beginning to annoy me now that you have reminded me of it.

I have *no* clue what it could possibly be.

I have the BDS 2" lift as well and get that rattle too. I thought it might be my spare or my roof rack as I added them around the same time so I took them both off to see. It did ride quieter without them both but the rattle was still there. I think Priell3 has a pretty good guess there as to what it may be. I am going to check mine...if thats the case it should be an easy fix cause I still need to put my different shocks in anyway.

Going back on Friday morning to the shop. When talking with the installer he did say there was a gap with the BDS shocks, however he used the spacers/washers that came with the kit and it took that gap away. He did mention he could stuff thicker spacers/washers to make it snug.

So we'll see what happens on Friday and I'll post again to let you know.

Here's the thing... if all these rattles are the same, it can't be related to aftermarket shocks in my case.

I'm still using stock shocks.

Driver's or Passenger's side? Mine is definitely on the Driver's side rear. I did not leave anything out, so I know nothing's missing.

Funny thing is, I'll be at Belle Tire (yup, THAT one) on Friday Afternoon...

Took the Jeep back to where I had the lift installed and they were aware of the issue. They added another washer to the Right Hand Rear Shock bolt and the rattle went bye bye. \/ \/ [-o<

I was told by the installer that he received the correct washers from BDS, however he only installed dual washers on the drivers side when he noticed that the shock was loose (grabbed a washer from the shop). He said the passenger side had no play in it but when he jacked up the rear he did find play with the Right Rear Shock. Must have been things loosening up. He added an additional washer everything was fixed.

I now wonder if BDS should include 2 extra washers for this?

This rattle is very common. Even if you fix the "side-to-side" motion with spacers, you may still have movement "up-and-down" because the bolts are smaller than the eye-holes in the bushings on the new shocks. Over time this can cause annoying thumping noises, and bend the shock bolts as well. Make sure your shock bolts fit tight INSIDE the bushing on the shocks when you install them.

I'll look into that to because I thought I was beginning to hear the sound again. Do you suggest a certain bolt size?

Do you mean the Lift, or the washers that attach with the shocks?

Your Home Depot / Lowes would have the washers. I took the Jeep back to the place they installed my Lift and they fitted both sides with some heavier washers. I continued to have a rattle on my right side until I finally checked on it myself, and found that they never torqued the bolt after my last visit! Been quiet every since (over 3 months!).

went to checker auto and they had no idea
went to a 4x4 store and they hooked me up
I installed them last night, which was a pain, but they are in there and no rickety sounds at all.

I initially called skyjacker on this and they had me put shrinktape on the bolt itself, this helped but didnt fully clear it up.

I never have been able to get rid of the noise in my rear shocks. I've tried washers and everything else. Tightened them down with an air wrench. they are TIGHT...and still make that noise...mostly when it's cold outside.. I might put the factory shocks back on...they don't rattle and they ride better than the aftermarket ones anyway.

The washer I got are actually rubber bushings. Have you taken it to a shop yet - Im not really fond of most shops but the one I took it to knew exactly what was up.

Hello:

I've had problems with my rear gate ratteling twice. Each time it was the gate not the glass. All that was required to fix was to adjust the latch on the body.

What kind of adjustment to the latch? Tighten?
