My brother scored a 2006 Jeep Liberty Limited last month. I drove it yesterday and liked it so much that I made a deposit today on a 2005 Liberty Renegade leftover.

I loved the styling, the layout, the power and all the options (as well as the skid plates, tow hooks, and light bar).

But I think what hooked me the most was the heritage. The last jeeps I rode in were military models in the mid 1980s, and even though todays models are eons from what the old models in the Marines were like, you can't deny the lineage. It is probably something intangible, but decades of experience say something.

Anyway, I hope to close the deal by Friday morning so I can be riding all weekend. Anyone have any tips or important facts on the break-in period? The model I'm buying has 69 miles on it.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

congrats on the jeep!

Advice on how to break the engine in will vary depending on who you ask. I was really easy on mine for about the 1st 5,000 miles and i havent had any problems out of it. Others have beat the crap out of it during that time and havent' had any problems either. Don't expect your gas milage to be anything to brag about for a while (or at all for that matter...lol). But it should improve as time goes on and parts begin to break in.

but most importantly, post some pics and HAVE FUN!!!

Thank You Tim

I appreciate the advice. I was gonna forgo this for a few years because I'm in law school but the 1997 Monte Carlo is getting coolant in the transmission. Rather than plunk down two grand for a new transmission, I figured I'd get in the game and join society... LOL!!

Anyway, I am looking forward to taking this on the sand this summer at the beach. All the reviews say that the Liberty outclasses its competitors when itc omes to off road use. I can believe that easily. I especially am impressed with all the new tech that they have applied. This isn't your grandfather's jeep...

BTW...I am a survivor of Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Was diagnosed stage 3 in 2004 so I will DEFINITELY put that message in my profile. As soo as I get my vehicle I will be posting up pics...

Thanks again...

Coolant

According to my Uncle, the transmission is cooled in the same way that the engine is cooled.

The oil from the transmission is pumped by the transmission through a second heat exchanger inside the radiator. Either that heat exchanger has broken down, OR the transmission line has fractured and the coolant is escaping into the transmission.

When this system breaks down, coolant returns to the transmission and transmission fluid blends into the coolant. Needless to say, on a front wheel drive car, that can be a hassle to fix, as well as quite costly.

If the car wasn't going to be 10 years old, I might have fixed it but I'm getting a little long in the tooth to be dealing with big car problems so...I bought a Jeep instead!! Woo hoo!!!!

Yeah, it's possible that the transmission cooler cracked into the radiator. You also would have pumped ATF into every water jacket in the block. I'm not a transmission guy by any means but I would try flushing the trans and filling her back up with ATF.

I was gonna try that

But after Friday I'll be in a different car anyway. The likelihood of them trying to resell it is slim so it will end as parts anyway...

Thanks for the congrats...

Wanted to hold off...

...on the reply because I picked up my new KJ today!! First, thanks for the kind words on cancer.

I'm from MA so I am looking forward to NOT having to shovel a small runway so I can get my car out during the first storm. Also, I am dying to take this on the beach, so after exams end on May 18, I am going to apply for the over-the-sand vehicle permit. I can't WAIT!!

First impressions:

Power- Very responsive and capable.

Handling- I can't believe a vehicle equipped with all terrain tires handles this well.

Looks- This is an eye catcher. My neighbor came home and her head snapped around when she pulled up in the lot and saw it.

Gas mileage- not so great but I couldn't really care less.

Ride- This is my first Jeep so I can't judge the ride but I will say that I am quite amazed that a vehicle set up this rigid rides as well as it does.

Things I will have to get used to- When the salesman was checking me out on the features when I was taking delivery I had to stop him. I felt like I was being briefed on the latest fighter jet. It took me 10 minutes to figure out how to turn on the roof lights and fog lights. Not the most intuitive design, but once you learn everything, it is very convenient. The 4WD controls seem simple enough. I won't know how they respond until I hit the sand this summer.

All in all, a great vehicle. I am not at all sorry I bought it!!

Quick questions

OK...

I need to know a few things:

How do I post photos here?
How can I use a photo when I post like you guys do?
I can't seem to get the profile to save my signature...any ideas?

Lastly:

Have Jeeps always been this addictive? LOL!!

Thank Bennett and Tim for the congrats... I took some pics and as soon as I can figure out how to post them I will.

Signature

Got the signature fixed. Problem was I was trying to add an AVATAR photo at the same time I was trying to put in the signature. Because the photo was too large, it wouldn't accept either. So this weekend I'll be taking some pics and posting.

News: I went today and got my free tank of gas from the dealer's vendor. I got it half full on delivery so I ran it down to almost empty. The alert came on as I was turning into the staation. It was $49.25 but I forgot that this monster has a twenty gallon tank.

Questions: Does this vehicle have some sort of transmission braking system? Mine came through with the HD Command trac 4WD system, but that shouldn't matter. I ask because when I slow down, I can feel the ****** down shift.

I have the all terrain tires and I find that if I hit the brakes hard, the front end shimmies. Not much, but just enough to be noticeable.

Thanks in advance for answers!

Hey wildcard6, congrats on the jeep!

I do not know why your liberty is shaking when you brake hard. Usually that means warped rotors but I do not think they would already be warped.

Hopefully you do not care about gas, b/c mine gets around 15mpg in the city, and 21-22 on the HW.

Good luck with law school! I thought engineering was hard but I couldnt imagine that.

Thanks Jeepster

Thanks for your wish of luck in law school. We are in the middle of finals right now. Criminal Law was last night, Contracts is the 11th, and Civil Procedure is the 18th. Then it's on to summer and school is OUT!!!

Back to the topic:

The brakes have evened out. This was an '05 leftover, so my mechanic said their may nave been a little rust on the rotors from it sitting for over a year (it only had 69 miles when I bought it).

Anyway, I drove it a lot last month to get it broken in and it is settling right down. I am totally impressed with this vehicle. It has influenced me to make two decisions:

1. I'll never own a used car again.
2. I'll never drive anything but a Jeep.

My brother owns an '06 Liberty Limited and he likes that saying:

"It's not an SUV... It's a Jeep."
