Why do you suppose the decision was made to call the Liberty in other countries the Cherokee?

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that other countries kinda hate the US right now and "liberty" Sounds very american. at the same time americans are full of pride- so a name like liberty would sell good here in the US.

-just my guess.... besides the liberty was going to replace the cherokee, right? Maybe the name was soposed to be cherokee and maybe they only decided to name it liberty in the US??

I was told that the Liberty and Cherokee were going to be offered to the North American market at the same time and so there had to be a name for each model.

DC changed it's plans to sell the XJ next to the KJ before it was released in Europe. Therefore it made sense to call the KJ a Cherokee in Europe.

Don't know if this is just an urban myth, but it sounds plausible!

I'm pretty sure it's for marketing. They've developed recognition with the name Cherokee, and since there are no more Cherokee's they might as well take advantage of the advertising and promotion money they've spent on the Cherokee all these years. I don't think they mind the name Liberty... after all... the "statue of liberty" is pretty french don't you think?

I'm on a Caribbean island and we get a lot of Euro spec cars here... the first time I saw a Liberty with a Cherokee emblem on the side, early last year, I thought some Liberty owner was being a smartass!

I have heard it was purely because there was already some auto's called "liberty" outside the US so they left the Chrokee moniker(sp?) on it...I wish they would have done that here as well. It would have made the XJ purist even madder than they are now

re: cherokee badges

I've been thinkin' the same thing. I mean, I don't have a problem with the Liberty name but when I heard that it was badged as a Cherokee overseas I decided I wanted to try and get some of the badges just to be different \:D/ Only problem would be trying to get the Liberty lettering off the door without ruining the paint :-k Ah well, I can dream anyway...

The DC dealer should be able to order the badging for you. I know I wanted an on/off switch for an amp in my XJ and I wnated it to match stock so I had them order me a Euopean XJ foglight switch :) They don't have the Low/High beam with fog lights rules :)

Cherokee Decal is part number 55156 272AG (you'd need two, one per front door)

I've been collecting a few export part numbers of things I'd like to add to my own KJ....

I read that in 2001 DC wanted to honor the original 1941 Willies MB "Nobel Liberator" hence the name Liberty and that market research indicated the name would be popular.
