Anybody elses KJ spitting out some sort of black stuff with the water in the exhaust on a cold start up? I have a trail from where I back my Jeep in every night, there is this stuff where the tail pipe is, and from where the hole in the muffler is.

I know the water is normal, but is this black stuff normal as well? I've never had a car do this before.

I can provide some pics if needed.

It's just loose carbon, that comes out with the condensate. Nothing to worry about, as carbon is a normal byproduct of combustion.
My Jeeps do this as well.

Mine does this when its cold as well. The black stuff is very minimal, but I still notice it.

The thing is, it's instantly after I start the engine.

No performance issues, no burning or using oil of any sort. I just thought it was strange. Never had a car do that before.

Actually my pop's Cherokee and my Mom's Lincoln do this as well. Dad's Honda doesn't, but it is the only one that is a lev. I really don't think that it is any thing to worry about.

Put in a can of good injector cleaner a couple times a year. You might get more of that soot or carbon if you do a lot of short trips where it dosn't get hot enough to burn that stuff out. IMO.

Entirely normal.

Now if you see crud buildup, that's oil, and very very bad. #-o

Crud build up where? On the exhaust pipe?

No, I mean IN the pipe... crud... not the carbon you're talking about. I'll have a pic tomorrow. It's too dark now.

About a 20 miles a day on it. 5 miles one way to work, 4 times a day. It's fully warm by about half way to work, so i don't think thats the issue.

They do say it takes about 10 miles for everything to fully warm up. But I guess you can't help that. I used to live 20 miles out of town and my exhaust systems and batterys used to last a long time. Highway miles are sure easier on them.

Once things get warmer I might run a bottle of Techron through it, to see if that helps.
