HOW TO: 02-03 IAC removal and cleaning

Reason for cleaning/replacement:

To start off this thread, according to TJKJ2000

Easy test for the IAC................

At idle(warmed up) crank the steering wheel either direction,if the RPM's raise it's working like it's supposed to.

Tools:

  • T20 to remove IAC screws
  • T30 to remove air resonator screws
  • Your favorite TB cleaner

Steps:

1. Remove necessary air intake parts to get to throttle body. (your choice here on what you want to remove. I like to remove the air filter box cover and hose before removing the air resonator box)
2. Remove IAC connector (Red arrow)
3. Remove PCV vacuum feed hose in order to access the lower IAC screw. Just need to pull the hose that's attached to the intake manifold right behind the TB. The whole unit is flexible to move it out of the way. (green arrow)

4. Remove IAC.
5. Clean IAC
6. Clean TB
7. Reverse steps for re-installation.

*My IAC was probably not cleaned since purchased used by wife in 2003. A thick layer of carbon was around the plunger (pointy end) and where the plunger meets the TB. Pictures here are after cleaning it.

*used a lot of cotton swabs to clean this. Hope you have strong finger muscles. Toothbrush wont fit all the way in to where the plunger meets TB.

Nice work & pics there Brian!
Now that is what I call the clean IAC machine!
The IAC controls idle and it is a good idea to keep em clean.
Sticky IAC leads to erratic rpm's even stalls & hard starts.
