Rear brake assembly / drum disc combo????

Good evening. I am new to the forum and have a question. My son broke his rear axel doing what 17yr olds do. My question is what is up with the rear brake assembly being a drum / disc combo? I have never seen this before. Is the drum just for parking brake? Just curious as I have worked on many Chevy, Ford, Dodge and never have seen this.

Yup, drum is just the parking brake.

Drum brake within a disc brake

I first encountered this rear brake setup on a mid-70s Corvette, when they first offered rear disc brakes. I presently have a 2004 Chevy Silverado that has this type of brakes. I don't know if any manufacturers are still doing this; it seems to require more parts than the more common way of doing the emergency brake through the rear discs.
