Can someone please tell me what type/grade of oil must I use in a manual transmission
2002 Liberty 2.5 CRD 4x4
The book only says MTF Synchromesh, that you can only get from the agents, looking for something local

I think it is safer to rather buy the oil from the Agents.
I am in the same position in that I also want to change my oil....I have read too many horror stories of KJ owners totally destroying their manual boxes by using an oil recommended by their local "gearbox specialists":freak3:

When in doubt, shell it out . . . cash, that is! I went through the same thing on my '99 Ram 5-speed. Lube shop didn't carry the recommended lube for that ****** either, so I hopped down to the local dealer and picked up what they needed.

Right, they sell the manuals everywhere but here, in fact, they get diesels every year model, we got them twice. Hopefully that will change soon.
The proper oil for all newer Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge manual transmissions is ATF+4, the very same lube that is used in the automatics. I am pretty sure they did that to improve fuel economy. Lighter oils allow the drive train to spin easily. The transmission parts were engineered for the ATF, they use different seals and tolerances, for the lighter oils, so you do have to use that oil. You can get ATF+4 easily aftermarket here in the USA, I would expect it is the same where you are. After all, Chrysler/Mopar does not make the oils they sell. It used to be Mobil when they were aligned with Daimler, but since Fiat is tight with Shell, they now make Mopar oils.

Have you done a oil change in your Jeep with ATF in the manual box.
I know the transfer box uses ATF, but not the main box itself.
If you say newer Jeeps what year model you refering to.

First time I ever saw ATF in a manual transmission was in about 1975. It was the factory fill on a 67 Dodge Dart. It worked fine then as is does now.

There is a syncromesh fluid just for the New Venture Gear manual transmissions used in Chrysler and GM cars. Chrysler has used it but switched to ATF-4 because it is cheaper. (And thinner for MPG) I know Pennzoil makes it, others probably do too. I read that it has friction modifiers to help with the plastic parts in the blocker ring assemblies.

When I drained the ATF-4 and replaced it with the Pennzoil syncromesh fluid in my 2002 Dodge Neon ACR the shifting got way smoother.

Conventional motor oil probably works too. So there is at least 2 or 3 choices.

I believe the lubes used in the manual transmission and transfer case will not be as critical as the engine or automatic transmission... Splash lube and no pressure...

The Pennzoil syncromesh is a great manual transmission fluid, as is BG Syncroshift. Any good synthetic MT fluid will be fine. If we were talking about an automatic trans. I would say ONLY use the Mopar +4 ATF. There's a big difference between auto and manuals!

OK according to the 2003 FSM parts fiche:

All automatics use fluid Mopar part number: 05013458AA for gallon container
05013457AA for quart container

All manual transmissions use fluid Mopar part number: 04874464....no quant. given


Strange that there are different part numbers when some of the experts here are saying just put in Mopar +4 ATF into your manual transmission!

I will go to my local Jeep spares with the parts print-outs to see what the spares people there have to say!
