It's the same engine for all the KJ's (02-07) and similar engines in KK (08-12) and jeep commander (better oiling in KK and commander) which will fit with minor work (3.7l only)

Bob will come along shortly and tell you if the tone or reluctor ring is the same for '03 and '04. Also, are both motors currently attached to 42RLEs or is the '03 hooked to a 45RFE?

Oop - missed this one so I'm a little late to this party.

The short answer is Yes - the '04 engine will work in the '03 without having to swap the camshaft tone ring or the reluctor ring. Leeann's question is the right one to ask - if you have the 45 mated to your '03 engine you'll need to look at the end of the crankshaft on the '04 donor. The '04 may have a pilot bearing pressed into the end of the crankshaft which will prevent the 45 torque converter from slipping into the crank. If your '03 has a 42RLE ****** you're good to go. :waytogo:

The 03 and 04 are the same BUT you need to know the build date on the 04. Have seen some where you do need to swap the cam tone ring and reluctor. Just ran into another one online as well. 04 into an 03 and no start due to the wrong pieces.

Thanks for the correct info on the build times SWilliams. You don't have any info on the rod bolts pre 06 as 6508504AA and after 06 as 6503928 ? I hear they both run from like 1998 to 2012 or so. I just can't find the difference in them. Thanks if anybody knows !
