Choosing the Best tire/gear ratio for 2.5" Lift

Hello All,

since we are all caring about shape and performance for our KJ.

I ve posted a thread for choosing the best gear ratio for bigger size,thanks goes to tummud for helping me to find where i can ask.

Ok here we go, i have 03 KJ with 42RLE with stock suspension with daystar budget lift 2.5" with 235/70/16 tires with stock gear ratio 3.73

I am planning to improve my KJ Power and torque as i always do safari "Sand Dunes Riding" in a desert environment of 30+ Celsius temp.

so what is better for me to keep my stock tires with stock gears or should i go with below options


1- 265/70/16 with Regearing to 4.10
2- 265/75/16 with regearing to 4.10
3- 245/75/16 with stock gear ratio
4- keep to stock which is 235/70/16 with stock gear ratio


Keep in mind that if i am going to do a regear, i will get front/rear 4.10 regear from a manual 2.4 KJ as it runs it as a stock gear ratio.


so let me know your opinion/experience so i can get the best performance from my liby.

With running sand I'd think you would want to go with a wider tire like the 265-70-16s and the 4.10s
For the 265-75-16s you'd need to go to 4 inches of lift and of course even more money.
But 2.5 inches, 265-70-16s with 4.10s would be my suggestion.
Just my 2 cents

My 04 was over 4 inches of lift/ 4.10s and 265-75-16s
also ran it with 245-70-16s, 245-75-16s, 255-70-16s, 265-70-16s and short time 265-75-16s and stock gearing
the 03 has 2.5 inches of JBA coilover lift with 265-70-16s and stock gears for a couple of weeks before going to 4.10s
Thats my experience , plus helping others go to 4.10s

Thanks Man for you suggestion, i would like to ask about the load on engine and transmission since we have changed the stock gear ratio, is it going to change maybe for worse (I mean overloading on both of them)

Also what about the Fuel consumption is going to change ?

and do you recommend buying wheel spacers or should i keep the wheels as is?

Less load on the engine when going to larger tires and regear for them, than going to larger tires and not regearing

have you read the post on here about REGEARING for larger tires ?

wheels with proper backspacing are much better than spacers IMO. Tom recently wrote a good post about regearing...well many good ones throughout the years if you search.

Yes for example if going 265-70-16s 16X8 with 5 inches of backspacing work great . 245-75-16s work well on 16 X 7 with 4 inches of backspacing
