Hello all. First of all, I have to say, I searched and read every post I could find on the matter. Nobody seems to have a concrete answer.

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited with the Infinity Premium sound system.

I installed a new Alpine CDE-164BT head unit a few days ago, to replace the old sad Sony that was installed by the previous owner. The Alpine sounds leaps and bounds better than the Sony head unit already, but I'm planning to do a further overhaul on the system. There are also some Alpine speakers in the front doors that were installed at the same time as the Sony HU. Whoever the previous owner had do the install just ran speaker wire from the existing harness to the door speakers and disabled the amp and remaining speakers.

For starters, what size are the dash speakers on this thing?! I've read and read and read. The more I read the more conflicting answers I find. I've seen anything from 2-1/2, 2-3/4, 3, and 3-1/2" speakers. So I'd like to know what the factory size speakers are. Also, what size(s) will replace the factory speakers? I understand that it may not be a one size fits all affair, so I'd just like to know what sizes will fit with no to minimal modification. I don't mind doing a little trimming/cutting, but I don't want to have to completely hack up the dash if I can keep from it.

As mentioned, I'm looking to finish doing a complete overhaul on the sound system on the Jeep to wake it up some. I'm planning to add an aftermarket amp since the factory amp has been bypassed and probably underpowered to begin with for most aftermarket applications. What would be best - to buy a component set, put the mids in the doors, tweeters in the dash? Component set, mids/doors, tweets/doors, and put a 2-3-1/2" speaker in the dash location? Or components, mids/doors, tweets/doors, and just leave the dash slots unused?

I just want to know what the best setup for sound is going to be in the Liberty application.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Good question- I'll be watching this thread.

The factory dash speakers are 2.8" 4 ohm tweeters; most just refer to them as 2.75" however.. and you can fit UP TO a 3.5" tweeter in there, some trimming of the mounting hole may be needed.

I'd like to get some better SQ out of my KJ as well. In my old Escort 5dr hatch (dont laugh) I had a wicked great sound system that sounded amazing. Pioneer HU, Alpine Type S and R speakers, 800w mono amp feeding a 12" Pioneer sub... it was just enough and all equalized together to have excellent quality output.

Don't even bother with the dash speakers, their crap! If you really want sound quality get your self a set of Alpine component speakers and install the tweeters in your door panel or pillar. I don't why the manufacturers put speakers in the dash.

I think under the front dash is a bad place to put a tweet or little component speakers. Every car I've done, I've put the tweeters in the door panel pointed at the driver and the difference is noticeable.

It depends on the speakers... the Bowers & Wilkens sound system in the newer Audi A8's has the tweeters in the same place on the dash as ours... except their speakers are omni-directional, unlike ours. So it CAN work... but proper acoustical science must be applied.
