Freeze your credit

This is a discussion on Freeze your credit within the Off Topic forums, part of the Member's Forums category!
Might not be a bad idea to freeze your credit with all the stuff going around - heard a report ...

Discuss anything here, as long as it's reasonable.

Default Freeze your credit

Might not be a bad idea to freeze your credit with all the stuff going around - heard a report that just about everyone's SSN has been compromised.

I'm not a USA Today fan at all...but they have all the numbers of the 4 credit bureaus you need.

All I can find is a July 9, 2015 news article after checking several sources. It is not on any of the regular network news programs or the news outlets on the net except for the one 3 year old article that I found anyway. I would think something like that would be all over every news outlet.

Not saying it didn't happen but I just didn't find anything for 2018. There is so much crap floating around you always need to check where it is coming from. (not saying USA-Today is good or bad.....just need to check multiple sources)

I wouldn't be too quick to freeze your own credit because maybe you freeze yourself out too. Not sure how that works.

Here's another from a better site. Freezing your credit just means someone can't run a credit report on you, so a thief can't open new accounts. You can thaw it later for a nominal fee.

Depending on your state law it may be free but typically it's $10 to free it per credit agency. There are 4 agencies you need to freeze it with not just 3.

If you have a police report for identity theft you can get it frozen for free with the report number.

I would highly suggest doing it. With the equifax leak and other recent hacks (home depot, target, etc) your ssn is more likely than not to have been stolen.

Unless you plan on making a large purchase and need to secure a loan or new cc in the next 3 months or less it would be a good idea to freeze your credit. Just keep the pin they give you secure so you can unfreeze it. Unfreezing it is very simple process with the pin. So don't lose it.

Another good thing to do is check your email and other account usernames at https://haveibeenpwned.com to see if your online account credentials have been compromised.

For more sensitive breaches like the Ashley Madison hack they will only tell you by emailing you so other people can't look up your account/email and see it.
