2004 just developed this strange metallic sounding rattle.
Sound is up front. Can't really pinpoint if its coming from the center or more towards driver side, passenger seems to think its more passenger side.
Can't really tell if its coming from inside or outside. If I open my window I can't really hear it over the sound of wind and tire studs.

Sound only starts above ~40 km/h, can't hear it at all under this speed. I totally believe the rattle is linked to going over 40. Sound does change the faster I go, but not a big change. Switching to neutral does not effect it, neither does stopping the engine while above 40.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Edit
Took drive around the block and the rattle changed greatly to what I witnessed a few hours ago. I now start to notice it around 20 kmh, the rattle speed and volume increases with speed. Very strange, as this was not the case before.

Revving the engine at a standstill does not create the sound.

Is it safe to drive without the front drive shaft for a few weeks?
Year is 2004. Unsure what transfer case I have. 231 I'm guessing. It does not have full-time 4wd

I just don't want to buy the parts locally, when I can order online for 1/3 of the cost.

Yes just make sure you don't accidentally shift into 4wd. I've heard that is a no no.

LOL

My brother lived in Colorado for a few years. Not once did the thought cross my mind to get him to ship stuff home.
Hes home now, I'm thinking about sending him back.
