Just purchased 2005 jeep liberty

We picked up a 2005 jeep liberty sport yesterday. It is dark
green with gray bumpers, all stock. Will post some photos
soon. It is in great condition only one dime size sport of rust
on the rear hatch,no rust anywhere else. It has 130k miles.
I would have preferred a lower mile jeep but we could
not find any that were rust free or nearly so. Someone here
suggested changing all the fluids which is a good idea.
Any other advice for keeping the jeep running strong for
another 100k + miles would be appreciated!

The first thing i want to do is find some reasonably priced
seat covers for the light colored seats. I was thinking of
buying some cross bars for the roof until i can afford
a good roof rack. Next would be some street legal driving lights.
We drive out in the boonies with gravel roads and they
would come in handy. Any suggestions anyone? Hi Tom,
finally found a good jeep, like you said it takes time! JB

Congrats. I own 2005 Limited Deep Beryl Green Pearl Color / Medium Slate Gray Leather Interior I purchased new. I use them to carry a canoe and general purpose for carrying lumber etc from hardware stores. Note-make sure your vehicle has the recall performed on your Jeep to protect the gas tank which give you a free OEM towing package frame.

I wanted the Mopar ones as they would be outside for years.
No corrosion many years later and aerodynamic/ locking.

This forum is really helpful, We have a jeep cherokee
xj 99. Have owned Wranglers 78, and a 97 in
the past, but this is our first liberty.

Does anyone have a favorite brand oil or oil filters?

I used to like Purolators, but after reading on Bob is the oil guy forums, they've had bad QC lately with tearing media. Oddly, Fram has gotten way better in the past few years and many people there seem to like the Tough Guard, so I put one on and the start up rattle is gone. Better Anti Drain Back Valve. 99% efficiency at 20 microns. The black Wix/ Napa Gold is good too. Although Wix is now owned by the same company as Tearolator, so not sure what that holds, but I haven't read anything bad yet.

Oil, I'm running Valvoline Maxlife. Seems fine, might try Pennzoil HM. Just get something that meets Mopar 6359 spec, 5w30, you'll be good to go.

I like the black Wix/Napa gold but lately I've been using only Motorcraft on all my vehicles (those that take the spin ons). Oil is a crapshoot to me but can't go wrong with any of the Mobil 1, Valvoline, Castrol and Pennzoil products. I use "full" synthetic and still only go maybe 4k OCI. I really don't mind the Supertech synth from Wally world. Gets some good reviews too. I keep an extra jug or two in the garage all the time.

An aside on the Purolator filters, The 05 I bought the end of December needed a change right after I got it. Was going to do it anyway with the other fluids. Didn't look too bad on the dipstick but that's not a good measure and then the 3k counter actually chimed before I got to it. I only drove it a few times before the oil change and it had that start up rattle HJ mentioned. It had a white Purolator "pro" filter on it. Put on a Motorcraft filter and filled up with the Supertech oil and the start up rattle was immediately gone.

Motorcraft is Purolator but they haven't had the issues that the normal Purolators have had. I'd run one. Silicone ADBV.

Made to Ford specs I guess. I'm a Ford fan so that's good enough for me. I think I may have seen that on the oil forum. The ADBV makes a big difference. I always thought Purolator were supposed to be pretty good but never used them that much. Still never heard of the "Pro" version. Wish I took a picture. Maybe one of those quickie places uses them.

Sounds like it to me. Never have seen them on the shelf.

Wix Proselects are the same as WM Supertechs...ok filter for $3. Good for short interval, wouldn't go over 4k though.

Just gunna post this for future reference for you. If you ever need to add coolant or change out any part of the cooling system, make sure to check your owners manual prior so you get the correct coolant. Universal coolant is a no go. Only HOAT coolant or Zerex G05

A complete fluid change / flush would be a good idea, that way you will know where she stands. So many people never flush / replace any thing other then the oil..

130k is around the mark my old 03 started needing a little love, nothing major.

Good Luck with your Jeep!

From my experience, change all coolant hoses before they bust open with/after the new coolant (zerex G05).

Go underneath and replace all parts where the rubber is cracked or missing!

congrats, got the same thing myself...best thing to do is go over it with a fine tooth comb now, find the little things that could turn ugly. download service manual and get a haines or chiltons, become familar with it and everything in it cause you will need that info....also, find a resurrection yard and **** the Libby's!!!
