Recently got my first new (to me) Jeep! An '02 Liberty 3.7 with 187k km on it.

The check engine light is on, so I got the shop to pull some codes for me. Here's what came up:

P 0161- HO2S Heater Circuit bank 2 sensor 2
P 0158- HO2S Circuit High Voltage Bank 2 sensor 2

So, do I need to replace an O2 sensor? And which one do these codes refer to?

Thanks in advance!

I've never used Denso O2's, but adamkrz's correct on Bosch, don't use them. Bosch and Chrysler don't play well together. Some have had good results, but most do not. I've always used and most recommend NTK o2's for Chrysler.

I have an 02 that had a p0153 recently. Replaced both upper o2s with NTK and it still hasn't gone away.
But NTK is what's recommended.
The lower o2s are far easier to replace as well.

The placement for the passenger side O2 sensor for a 2002 must be different from the 2007. My passenger side sensor is between the transmission pan and the frame. It was a PIA to get it back in after I replaced it.

Anyway, I had to use some rust dissolver because of the crappy steel used for the exhaust had messed up the O2 bung. After that and some PB blaster it finally came lose.

Do it with the engine warmed up, spray some PB blaster on it and let it soak for a few mins. Get an 02 socket and use a breaker bar, I replaced one of the down stream ones and it broke free instantly. Took longer to change into work clothes.

Yes PIA

I did my passenger rear O2 sensor
over the summer. I have about 6
O2 sockets and specialty wrenches.

Nothing worked. If I could get some-
thing on it, not enough room to swing.

So I came at it from the rear and used
a recipricating saw to cut the head off.
Then I used a long (24") swivel head
1/2" ratchet, and then it was easy.

Thought I'd share what I had to do, in
case it helps anyone.

Just had the P0158 code last week. Replaced all four sensors with NTK ones while at work and reset the light. No problems since. Good luck

I've replaced thousands of O2 sensors in all makes and models and yet to come across one that I could not easily take out with my 22mm Snap On Flank Drive wrench.

you must check ground of the sensor oxygen connector, the signal received from PCM (5v) and the upstream cable (if short to ground or short to voltage) .
Btw, the new sensors should be re programmed on PCM.
